The public is invited to submit applications for the City of Gig Harbor 2024 annual comprehensive plan amendment docket by June 30, 2023.
The City of Gig Harbor Comprehensive Plan integrates the community’s ideas, concerns, and preferences into policies and goals regarding the city’s long-term development, what the implementing regulations should accomplish, and what facilities and service levels are needed. The Comprehensive Plan expresses Gig Harbor’s vision of itself and what it would like to become and is the policy underpinning for all of the city’s planning activities.
The Growth Management Act requires that the city review and update the entire Comprehensive Plan every eight years for consistency with state law, county-wide planning policies, and regional growth strategies. This update is known as a periodic review with the next review cycle due in December 2024. Residents and interested parties are invited to propose amendments to the Comprehensive Plan as well. These are known as privately initiated amendments. Amendments can include things like: changing the land-use of a particular piece of property or area so that it can be rezoned for different uses; setting goals and strategies for better protecting the environment; allowing new and innovative housing or development types; expanding recreational opportunities; etc.
Per Gig Harbor Municipal Code, privately initiated applications are due on or before the last working day of June (June 30) for consideration in the 2024 update. Applicants must hold two public meetings within the 90-day period preceding their application submission.
