Public Works Field Crews Have Gone Mobile

The City of Gig Harbor Public Works Department uses a technology-based infrastructure management system called Cartegraph.

Our crews are tasked with the daily maintenance of City infrastructure, whether it be parks, streets, water, storm water or wastewater related.  Our main responsibilities include providing safe conditions and protecting the taxpayers’ investment. We need to be able to know what condition our assets are in and what needs to be inspected, cleaned, repaired or replaced.

Through the use of iPads, mobile technology is now being used in the field by Public Works staff. Daily tasks can be set up on a route to get the job done more efficiently and effectively.  Response time for citizen requests are improved as issues are viewable immediately and high priority issues can be assigned directly to field staff. Accurate information is available so workers can query any asset to view location data, maps, photos, ownership and scheduled maintenance. They can also update the database with the tap of a finger.  This provides improved workflow, less time filling out paperwork and more time doing the work that matters.
