At the December 18th City Council meeting, Gig Harbor Councilmembers expanded on their vision for a future multi-purpose sport complex with the approval to purchase an 11.5-acre parcel in north Gig Harbor, at 10770 Harbor Hill Drive.
As part of the $3.5 million-dollar purchase, the city will acquire 11.5 acres adjacent to existing land previously dedicated to a complex. Total acreage for future development is now approximately 30 acres.
The hope for a turf and lit sports field complex has been part of the current city council’s vision for several years. This purchase, combined with the purchase of the Gig Harbor Little League fields in September of this year, will provide more area for future amenities for the community and bring hopes of drawing regional sports competitions to the area. A sports complex will offer the community the ability to host tournaments on a year-round basis including winter months, typically off-season periods for tourists and visitors to Gig Harbor.
The city will form a steering committee early in 2018. Groups participating include the Tom Taylor YMCA, Gig Harbor Little League, Peninsula School District, Peninsula Light, Olympic Property Group and others.
